We often get asked how we come up with so many designs. Where do the ideas come from and how do we go about actually creating them?
The answer is remixing: taking a few references, adding a comedic spin, and merging them together into a cool design that looks great on a t shirt:
But what exactly is a remix? “A remix is defined a piece of media which has been altered from its original state by adding, removing, and/or changing pieces of the item.”
Remember the Queen/David Bowie song “Under Pressure,” which was later taken by Vanilla Ice and revamped into “Ice Ice Baby”? This is a perfect example of remixing; Borrowing the iconic beat from one song to create a new one.
And this is more or less what we do on a lot of our t shirt designs, only we use images instead of songs. We photoshop pictures to create something new (and funny, of course): The Betty Ford Center logo remixed with a Yeti (Sasquatch) to make our “Yeti Ford” t-shirt, The Wu Tang Clan logo remixed with Winnie The Pooh characters to make our “Pooh Tang” tee. Get it?
So just exactly HOW do we do it? This is a question we get asked a lot.
The simple answer isn’t so simple. It’s the combination of a brain full of historical and pop culture references, a knack for graphic design, and a sense of humor. We’d probably do well on Jeopardy.
But unfortunately, there’s no real way we can tell YOU how to do it, unless you possess these skills too.
What I can tell you is that BigBadTees has a passion for creating ORIGINAL t shirt designs. We never steal from other shirt shops and we CERTAINLY don’t buy designs from places like this:
Literally every t shirt design you see on this site was hand crafted by the BigBadTees design staff, and we take a lot of pride in that.
So – are you funny, good at graphic design, and have a mind full of seemingly useless information? Well, maybe that information isn’t so useless after all, and maybe – just maybe - this is the business for you!
That’s all for now.
Best,
PD
