HOW DID WE START BIG BAD TEES?
A long time ago, in an office building far, far away…
Greetings to all our readers out there, and welcome to the OFFICIAL BigBadTees Blog! I’m PD, and this is our very first post. My partner AE and I own BigBadTees.com. People often ask me, “How did Big Bad Tees come to be?” This is the best way that I can explain it: Have you ever seen The Secret Life of Walter Mitty? If you haven’t, don’t. It sucked. If you have, then you know the plot: A bored-to-tears employee, Mitty, spends day after monotonous day at a tedious job that he despises. To get away from it all, he “escapes” into grandiose daydreams. This goes on for about 2 and a half deplorable hours when eventually, he goes on a real life adventure and discovers himself. Here's what the movie poster should have looked like:
Usually at this point in the story people say, “Hey P, what the hell are you talking about?” Let me explain…
As much as I didn’t like the movie, the story resonated with me. Why? Because I was Walter Mitty; stuck working a job I didn’t like, feeling trapped and dreaming of something greater for myself. At the time, AE was my friend and co-worker. He and I shared two things in common: a deep, dark sense of humour and a knack for graphic design. We would exchange funny memes and email photoshopped pictures back and forth to pass the time; a couple of Walter Mitty's, we were. Eventually, we started making memes, so we founded our first comedy website together – www.beansandbriff.com – which we still operate to this day.
What started as a hobby and an outlet for our comedic minds shifted to the idea that perhaps we could make a business out of our material. After running BeansAndBriff for about a year, we realized something: monetizing memes is hard. So we thought, how can we carry on with our comedy-inspired graphic design work, continue making people laugh, but also earn a living at it? The most obvious answer was, how about plastering our work on t-shirts and selling them? And there, in a nutshell, is the answer to the question of how BigBadTees came to be.
Flash forward another year and Big Bad Tees is in full swing. We currently have over 300 unique comedy t-shirt designs, with more being added every week. Pop culture tshirts, fan art t-shirts, movie tees, TV shirts, and more. We even have a section for funny Canadian t-shirts for our pals north of the border.
So that’s all for now. I think that’s a solid first post. If you have any questions for us, drop us a line or feel free to leave a comment below.
Peace and love
